How to Choose an Apparel Sourcing Partner in India

What to check before you place your first order: factory capability, sampling, quality checks and export documents.

How to Choose an Apparel Sourcing Partner in India

India has thousands of garment manufacturers, and no single factory is good at everything. A sourcing partner sits between you and those factories. The right one saves you time and money; the wrong one adds a layer of cost and confusion. Here is what to check before you commit.

Do they match the factory to the product?

Knitted T-shirts, woven shirts and denim are made in different clusters, on different machines, by different specialists. Ask where each of your products will be made and why that factory was chosen. A good partner can explain the choice in plain terms.

How do they handle sampling?

Samples are where problems are cheapest to fix. Before bulk production you should approve the fabric, the fit, the colour and the decoration.

  • Who pays for samples and courier, and is that stated up front?
  • How many rounds of changes are normal?
  • Is the approved sample kept as the reference for bulk production?

What quality checks do they run, and when?

A final inspection alone is too late. Look for checks at three points: before cutting (fabric and colour), during production (stitching and measurements) and before packing (finishing, labels and cartons). Ask what happens when a check fails.

How clear is their communication?

You should know where your order stands without chasing. Agree how often you will get updates and who your contact is. Notice how they handle your first few questions: slow or vague answers before the order rarely improve after it.

Can they manage export paperwork and shipping?

A garment that is ready but cannot ship is still late. Your partner should prepare the export documents, pack for export and coordinate the freight, on terms agreed with you at the quote stage.

A simple way to start

Begin with one product and a modest quantity. Judge the partner on the sample, the updates and whether the delivery matches what was promised. If that goes well, extend the range.
